Martin Luther Quotes

“From the beginning of my Reformation I have asked God to send me neither dreams, nor visions, nor angels, but to give me the right understanding of His Word, the Holy Scriptures; for as long as I have God’s Word, I know that I am walking in His way and that I shall not fall into any error or delusion.”

“Blood alone moves the wheels of history.”

“Faith is permitting ourselves to be seized by the things we do not see.”

“God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars.”

“I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen.”

“I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess.”

“If I am not allowed to laugh in heaven, I don’t want to go there.”

“Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world.”

“Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime.”

I am looking for Luther’s quote about ideas having feet, going places and accomplishing things. Can you provide the quote and source? Thanks

      John,
I do not know that quote but I’ll look around to see if I can find anything. Perhaps some of my Lutheran readers might weigh in with some info.
Thanks for reading the BLOG and taking the time to write to me.

Try searching for his “Table Talks”. Sounds like it may be in there.

I’m looking for what I think might be a quote. It was in the movie that was done after his story several years back. It goes something like, “The word of God cannot be ignored for the word of man.” Do you think you could find it please

    Sean, Is this the quote?:

In writing lectures on Psalms, Romans, and Galatians from 1513 to 1516 Luther came to the conclusion, fundamental to Protestant theology, that man depends for his salvation on the sheer grace of God, made available through the sacrificial death of Christ. Christ is not primarily the terrible judge who condemns sinners, but the redeemer upon the cross. Man has only to believe and to accept in trust what God has done to be forgiven, even though sin is never entirely taken away. This was to become the central doctrine of Luther’s creed: the doctrine of justification by faith.
