Christmas Prophecies

Christmas Prophecies

One of the many things that I love about Christmas worship is the OT prophecies and their NT fulfillments.  I’m told that there are about 300 such statements in scripture.  I don’t claim to know much more than a hand full of them but here’s a few of my favorites, collected into a responsive reading that would be appropriate for an Advent or Christmas Eve Service:

The Messiah would be born of a virgin:
Pastor:  Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. – Isaiah 7:14
All:      She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.  – Matthew 1: 21

The Messiah would come as a descendant from David:
Pastor: In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line; he will do what is just and right in the land. – Jeremiah 33:15
All:      He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. – Luke 1:32

The Messiah would be preceded by a “forerunner”:
Pastor:  See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the LORD Almighty. – Malachi 3:1
All:      In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” – Matthew 3:1,2

He would be anointed by the Holy Spirit:
Pastor: The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of power,
the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD – Isaiah 11:2
All:      As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. – Matthew 3:16

An amazingly accurate picture of the Savior’s birth:

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.  For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,        and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end.  He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.  The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. – Isaiah 9:2, 6, 7
