The Ten Commandments – Responsive Prayer
P: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.”
C: God the Father has freed us. Help us to be eternally grateful.
1P: “You shall have no other gods before me.”
C: You are the only God that we will ever need. You are all that we want. You supply all our needs.
2P: “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
C: We desire a personal relationship with God because He is infinitely better than any earthly idols. Help us to see this when we become weak.
3P: “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. “
C: We are your people; we bear your name. Help us to value this privilege and to treat your name with the utmost respect.
4P: “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”
C: You have made a beautiful world for us to enjoy. Help us to worship you, together, as a gathering of believers on a weekly basis. We will enjoy our day with you and we look forward to it each week.
5P: “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
C: We thank you for the gift of parents; help us to respect them and others in authority as you have directed.
6P: “You shall not murder.”
C: We view all life as sacred and having enormous worth.
7P: “You shall not commit adultery.”
C: You have created the institution known as marriage for our enjoyment and fulfillment. Help us to love one another as Christ loved the church.
8P: “You shall not steal.”
C: We thank you for the blessings of material goods. Help us to be thankful for these possessions and to be respectful of others.
9P: “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.”
C: We are to love one another for we are all your children and You see value in us. Help us to not speak negatively of each other; be it verbally or in writing.
10P: “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
C: We are thankful for the blessings which you have given to us. Help us to love people and not things.
