“I tell you the truth” – Jesus

“I tell you the truth” – Jesus

In scripture, Jesus says’ “I tell you the truth” a whopping 78 times.  I once heard a preacher say that “the truth” is Jesus’ native language.   That’s a cool way of thinking about whatever it is that Jesus has to say.

Here’s a few of my favorites:

I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.  – Matthew 5:18

So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. – Matthew 6:2

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. – Matthew 6:5

When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. – Matthew 6:16

I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. – Matthew 11:11

He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. ” – Matthew 17:20

And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. – Matthew 18:3

I tell you the truth, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. – Matthew 18:13

I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. – Matthew 18:18

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. – Matthew 19:23

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. – Matthew 21:21

I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. – Matthew 25:40

I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her. – Matthew 26:13

I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. – Mark 3:28

I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. – Mark 12:43

I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his hometown. – Luke 4:24

I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise. – Luke 23:43

I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man. – John 1:51

I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdomof God unless he is born again. – John 3:3

I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdomof God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. – John 3:5

I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. – John 5:19

I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. – John 5:24

I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. – John 5:25

I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. – John 6:47

Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. – John 6:53

I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. – John 8:34

I tell you the truth, before Abraham was born, I am! – John 8:58

I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. – John 10:7

I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. – John 13:16

I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me. – John 13:20

I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. – John 14:12

But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. – John 16:7

In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. – John 16:23

The Gospel has no Limits

The Gospel has no Limits

Jesus’ death on our behalf, with its life saving forgiveness and guarantee of eternal life is for everyone who believes; regardless of ethnicity, race, gender, culture, wealth or lack thereof, geographic location, socioeconomic status, and educational level.  It cuts across time; dividing the very calendar that the world uses as their year zero reference.  The apostle John does an incredible job of making this abundantly clear.

Everyone who believes in him may have eternal life” (John 3:15).

Whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Whoever believes in him is not condemned” (John 3:18).

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life” (John 3:36).

Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life” (John 5:24).

Whoever comes to me I will never drive away” (John 6:37).

He who believes has eternal life” (John 6:47).

He who feeds on this bread will live forever” (John 6:58).

Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him” (John 7:38).

Found Your Gifts Yet?

Found Your Gifts Yet?

“Developing the gifts God gave you is an act of worship” – Darrell Evans

Have you found your spiritual gifts yet?

God calls us to be individuals; creative, expressive and active.  He has never made anyone else quite like me and He’s never made anyone else like you.  He is a creator, not a duplicator when it comes to us.

Each one of us has been created and crafted to do specific good works; works for the church, works for each other, and works to build up the body of Christ.

There are different kinds of gifts,

… but the same Spirit.

There are different kinds of service,

…  but the same Lord.

There are different kinds of working,

… but the same God works all of them in all men.

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. – 1 Cor 12:4-7

You also have been called and have been given gifts.  Perhaps you are struggling to find them.  My advice would be that you not wait for a sign or to be asked by someone else to serve.  Sometimes this happens; but God usually works in more subtle and mundane ways, at least in my experience.   Take the initiative.  If you are a guitarist, drummer, bass player, pianist or any other type of musician, surprise your Pastor, tell him that you want to serve.  If you write poetry, tell your Pastor that you want to serve.  If you like to teach, tell your Pastor that you want to serve.  If you enjoy working with children, tell your Pastor that you want to serve.    If you are an artist, tell your Pastor that you want to serve.  If you are a singer, tell your Pastor that you want to serve.  If you are good with computers, video and audio equipment, tell your Pastor that you want to serve.  If you know how to arrange flowers, tell your Pastor that you want to serve.  If you know how to sew, tell your Pastor that you want to serve.  If you enjoy praying, tell your Pastor that you want to serve.  These are just a few of the gifts that our Lord has so abundantly blessed us with.

The Gospel of John is the “I Am” Gospel

The Gospel of John is the “I Am” Gospel

John 6:35
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

John 6:41
At this the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”

John 6:48
I am the bread of life.

John 6:51
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:18
I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”

John 8:23
But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.

John 8:58
“I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

John 9:5
While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

John 10:7
Therefore Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep.

John 10:9
I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture.

John 10:11
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

John 10:14
I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—

John 11:25
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

John 14:6
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:11
Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.

John 14:20
On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.

John 15:1
I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

John 15:5
I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

1 Corinthians 13:8

1 Corinthians 13:8

Love never fails. (NIV)
Love never dies.  (MSG)
Love will last forever.  (NLT)
Love never ends.  (ESV)
Love never failith.  (ASV)
The love doth never fall. (YLT)
It doesn’t matter how you say it; God is love and love does not fail.

“Love” is a difficult word to define and you will get a different definition from anyone that you ask.  I once did a children’s message on 1 Cor 13:1-8 which is Paul’s definition of what love is, and what it is not; and it’s actually God’s definition as well since it’s His inspired word that Paul is writing.  The approach that I employed required two paper bags, one labeled “Love is” and the other labeled “Love is not”.  I then gave each child a piece of paper with the scriptural definitions printed on them and their job was to place them in the appropriate bags as I read the text.

In the bag labeled “Love is”, they placed the following:

Patient
Kind
Keeps no record of wrongs
Does not delight in evil
Rejoices with truth
Always protects
Always trusts
Always hopes
Always perseveres

In the bag labeled “Love is not”, they placed the following:
Envious
Boastful
Proud
Rude
Self-seeking
Easily angered
