Worship Leader = Pastor

Worship Leader = Pastor

In my denomination, the “worship leader” is the Pastor – end of discussion, and I wholeheartedly support this.  He has given 8 years of his life to higher education, he has pursued a Masters in Divinity and he has learned the Greek and Hebrew languages.  What the rest of the Christian world refers to as a “Worship Leader”, we use the term “Musical Director” or “Musical Coordinator” or “Praise Band Leader” or some other similar term.  This just seems right with me.

So, in the traditional church that predominantly uses hymns, what are the traits of this elusive “Praise Band Leader?”  I can only tell you what traits I strive for after doing this for over a decade.

  1. I stay in the Word as much as possible by reading God’s word, devotional books and praying as often as possible.
  2. The only music that I listen to is Christian music. I keep on top of the new releases coming out of this genre and I collect lead sheets and piano arrangements.  I also make it a habit to categorize all of my music by scripture reference.
  3. I attend church and bible class regularly and am active in my membership. It is an inseparable part of my life and is woven into my daily and weekly routines.
  4. I know my congregation well. I know them better than my own fretboard and believe me that says a lot.  I know what songs they can sing and what songs they will enjoy in worship.  I use this knowledge in choosing music.
  5. I follow my Synod and read as much of their correspondence as I can. I use their APPS, I bookmark and use their websites, I listen to their podcasts and I subscribe to all of their email lists.  I strive to know their teachings and doctrines and apply these principles in choosing music.
  6. I am diligent in my work. I do my worship planning at least one month ahead of time and I submit my song choices to our Pastor so that he can review the lyrics for false teachings (and they do exist in some of today’s music) and for appropriateness for the intended Sunday.  If it’s a new song, I also include a youtube link so that he can not only hear the lyrics but the style of the song as well.  I respect his opinion and never second guess his responses.  I trust him and I learn from him.  He is responsible for our worship and has to answer to God and to his Synodical leaders if things go bad – not me.  I fully understand this.
  7. I am well prepared when I am scheduled to accompany worship. I arrive early, do a sound check and organize my arrangements.  We are well rehearsed and I know what lines I am singing, all the transitions and the song flow.  Sometimes I will express my musical creativity through my guitar playing but never in a showy manner.
  8. I turn the other cheek when someone calls a song a “7/11” song or expresses other hurtful remarks with regards to either contemporary music or traditional hymns because both are worshipful and powerful and because I want to follow Jesus’ lead.
  9. I do my best to fix my eyes on Jesus at all times.
  10. I acknowledge the presence of the Spirit inside me and rely on Him to inspire, to teach and to lead me.
  11. I am not a leader, I am a servant.
  12. I am a sinner. The above characteristics are my goals and oftentimes I fall short.

Spiritual Milk

Spiritual Milk

Nutritionists tell us that we need to obtain our vitamins through food as opposed to pills and that our daily intake should contain at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. This is good advice, but I watch in amazement as a newborn child only needs one item for their complete nutritional needs as provided by their nursing mother. While on this milk they vibrantly grow stronger each day. Their skin is beautiful, their eyes are like engaging jewels and their bodies grow stronger right in front of your eyes.

But what about their spiritual needs? What about our spiritual needs? Just like mothers milk, there is only one thing we need and that’s a right relationship with Jesus in our life. Everything falls into place once this happens. We get baptized, the Holy Spirit inhabits our lives, we partake of the Lord’s Supper regularly, we pray daily, we make offerings to our Lord, we gather to worship and praise, we read God’s word and through all of this our faith builds over time. When you attend church, you should leave feeling spiritually fed – regardless of your background and age. Start to ask some very serious questions if this isn’t happening because the problem can be either you or your church.

Picking the right church is a bit tricky. Here’s my litmus test:

1. All Christian churches regardless of denomination will profess to teach God’s word in truth and purity so this in effect is not a good enough discriminator. You need to know the bible yourself to make an informed assessment of this.
2. Look for churches that read God’s word regularly, in every single worship service, and also verify that all portions are being used throughout the year – every book, every verse and every word is important.
3. Look for churches that administer the Sacraments according to God’s word. Yes, you need to know that much as well.
4. Look for churches that pray together in every service.
5. Look for preaching that is based on God’s word and that uses some scripture throughout.
6. Look for churches that confess their sins together, that are reminded of the forgiveness of sins and receive the absolution of their sins on a regular basis.
7. Look for churches that start their worship in the name of the Triune God.
8. Look for fans of the coffee hour, jello, the Green Bay Packers and Star Wars (just kidding, you know who you are.)
The common theme here is God and His word, not man or his feeble traditions.

Make it your New Year’s resolution to find a church if you don’t have one already.

It was popular last year, so I am doing it again.  Here are my “new song” recommendations for each of your Lectionary-based worship services in the upcoming church year.  On most of the Sundays I have included a choice of songs.  I have not used all of these songs in worship and some of them were released in 2015 so please have your Pastor review all the lyrics prior to use.

Most people, even non-musicians know that major chords sound happy and that minor chords sound sad but it goes deeper than that. Much deeper.

For example,

A minor sixth chord is the saddest chord on earth. I am quite sure that this chord will not exist in heaven.  It sounds of loneliness, separation, abandonment and heartbreak.

An Augmented chord is used to express astonishment, amazement, surprise, magic and transformation.  Substitute it into a Transfiguration song!

Passion

Passion!

“To play a wrong note is insignificant, to play without passion is inexcusable.” – Ludwig Beethoven

I know a thing or two about passion. I sing contemporary music with passion. I wish I could sing hymns with passion, like most Pastor’s I know can do. But God, for reasons known only to Himself, has not given me these gifts. So I cope.

But it is a blessing to know your passion. I am blessed and I am grateful. It took me 50 years to find this passion. Who knew?

Many people work their entire lives and dislike what they do for a living. In my life I have served every Church Council position invented. I wasn’t very good at any of them in spite of my best efforts. I finally found my passion when God led me into the position of leading contemporary worship with a guitar. Passion happens when your gifts and your talents line up.

I have learned that you cannot fake passion. Passion makes you do crazy things. It is the fuel that drives your dreams and makes you happy to be alive. It invites you to worship your Maker wholeheartedly for stirring these passions within you.

Your life will turn around once you find your passion. It will be filled with purpose, hope and fulfillment.

My passion feeds my faith. I look forward to Sunday worship like never before. I read my bible like never before. I pray often. I listen to Christian music all the time. I can feel the Holy Spirit working in my life like never before. I understand our church’s doctrines like never before. My passion has become my life.

I really don’t know how to direct you to find your passion, but perhaps this will help:

  1. Think about what you naturally do well.
  2. Look to the bible for insight and wisdom. If you don’t know where to start, consider reading a few proverbs a day. It will change your life.
  3. Pray for help in discovering and honing your passion.
  4. Get out of your comfort zones.
  5. Don’t look at what you need. Take inventory of what you already have and strive to master it.
  6. Don’t let anyone discourage you, especially if you feel that it’s God’s will for your life.
  7. You are God’s handiwork. Don’t get discouraged by what others might say.
  8. Determination, humility and persistence are good things to have.
  9. In what area do you want to make a difference?

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” –Jeremiah 29:11

“May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. ” – Hebrews 13:20-21

Have you witnessed passion in worship?

Our God Reigns

Your Pastor’s Sermon Title

This last Sunday, we celebrated “Christ the King” Sunday.  We sang some incredible hymns including one of my favorites – “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name.” As a worship leader responsible for choosing music (in my case – Contemporary music), I often reflect on the hymns, the readings, the introductions to the readings, the children’s message, the prayers and the sermon to get some ideas for future “Christ the King” Sundays. Oftentimes, the answer is right there, staring me in the face; the Pastor’s sermon title. The title of Pastor Ehlers’s sermon this last Sunday was “Our God Reigns”.

So next year I will consider:
“Our God Reigns” by Bebo Norman
-or-
“Our God Reigns” by Brandon Heath
-or-
“Our God Reigns” by Tim Light
-or-
“Our God Reigns” by Martin Smith (band Delirious?)
-or-
“Our God Reigns” by Joe Pace
-or-
“Our God Reigns” by John Waller
-or-
“Our God Reigns” by Leonard E. Smith

Next, type this title into the search engine of your favorite place to buy music. I like http://www.lifewayworship.com. Just type in “Our God Reigns” and a dozen or so songs will come up, including variations like “He Reigns” and “Our Messiah Reigns.” Of course, you need to review the lyrics and search for the sheet music.  But this technique will get you in the right ballpark.

How easy is that?

Pastors, what was your sermon titled this past Sunday?

Steve
