Advent Worship Planning Mind Map

Advent Worship Planning Mind Map

I don’t use mind maps much, but others do, and perhaps this will be of some use to you.  A mind map is a pictorial roadmap.  It is a plan that shows a central idea with topics attached to it.  So the following figure is a mind map that shows the worship planning for a typical worship service.  This example is for Dec 9, 2012 (Advent 2) and it is planned to be a contemporary service.  All four scripture readings are listed with songs attached to each reading that could be good choices to go along with the theme.  There is also an Advent prayer to go with the readings.

This mind map was created on an IPAD using the iOS APP called SimpleMind+ but there are many others.

Advent Candle Lighting Ceremony

Advent Candle Lighting Ceremony

I have created an Advent Candle Lighting Ceremony for church or personal use.

*** NEW THIS YEAR – YOU CAN DOWNLOD YOUR COPY RIGHT HERE:

https://app.box.com/s/ie7fllgeakmtm384b2je

Here is a sample of the first week:

Week 1  – candle of Expectation, Hope or Prophecy
Scripture:
As we light the first Advent candle, we are reminded that Jesus is “the Light of the World.”  We read in John 8:12 … “Again, Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Responsive Reading (focus is on “hope”):

P:  Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD. – Psalm 31:24
C:  We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. – Psalm 33:20

P:  The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him; – Lamentations 3:25a
C:  Hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. – Romans 5:5

P: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. – Romans 15:13
C:  Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised, is faithful. – Hebrews 10:23

P and C: May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you. – Psalm 33:22

Prayer:  Lord, renew a sense of hope in our hearts this morning/afternoon/evening.  Let your Word and your promises remind us of  the hope that our prayers will be answered, that doors of opportunity that seem closed will be opened, that broken relationships will be mended, that diseased bodies will be healed and that damaged trust will be restored.  We pray this in eager expectation of our coming Savior; Jesus Christ.  Amen.

A Multi-Part Reading: Shepherds, Angels and Magi

A Multi-Part Reading: Shepherds, Angels and Magi

The Shepherds:

Reader #1: And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them,

Reader #2:  Do not be afraid.  I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.  This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.

All:  Dear Lord, help us to see and experience the wonder and the awe of that first Christmas as the Shepherds did some 2000 years ago.

The Angels:

Reader #1:  Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

Reader #2:  Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.

All:  Dear Lord, help us to praise you as the Angels did some 2000 years ago.

The Magi:

Reader #1:  After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked,

Reader #2: Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?  We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.

All:  Dear Lord, help us to worship you as the Magi did some 2000 years ago.

Emmanuel (God with us):

Pastor:           Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign:

All:      The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.  (Is 7:14)

Rod (Branch of Jesse):

Pastor:           A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;

All:                from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.  (Is 11:1)

Pastor:           In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples;

All:                the nations will rally to him, and his place of rest will be glorious.  (Is 11:10)

Pastor:           “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches.

All:      I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.”  (Rev 22:16)

Key of David:

Pastor:           I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David;

All:      what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.  (Is 22:22)

Wisdom:

Pastor:           All this also comes from the LORD Almighty,
All:                wonderful in counsel and magnificent in wisdom.  (Is 28:29)
